FOLDING LIGHT BALL

Personal Form analysis & design project | 1 Month Sep.2021-Oct.2021

This project was the first project I did when I entered graduate school and lasted four weeks. In this project, I took a hairpin as the base product and deconstructed and analyzed its form and how it was used to generate a final product, a handheld lamp, through form.

I analyzed the structure and created an abstract model from the usage scenario and the actual function of the hairpin. Using an analysis of this form, a few movement patterns and characteristics have been captured and extracted. Cross shows the interaction between hair and the hairpin; Support shows the main function of the hairpin which is to make hair fluffy; REFLECTIVE shows the user's behavior in front of the mirror while using.

In this process I first thought about the term reflection, and the result of that thought focused my attention on the Typology  of Light. Combined with the core language of the keyword form derived earlier, I tried to transform the abstract concept of reflection and ideology into a functional direction through a series of lighting schemes derived from different sensory manipulations (sketch model exploration) and a series of origami experiments.

I first tried to optimize the mockup by origami, and then I tried to use grasshopper to mockup the shape

In this process after experimenting with digital modeling and real paper folding with different material, I chose the paper board with led light embedded inside to show the function and how it works. To make my work more reasonable  and solid, I  expand the model  through parameterization.  I used laser engraving to cut out creases in the paper and then used to try to fold out the desired model effect.
